There are some reports pinging around stating that Holbrook cancelled this fixture meaning we were given a walk over win and a 40 - 0 victory. As Bo Jo would say, utter piffle. Below is the true report of a game that showed strength in depth and hints of genius. We had to make some odd selection decisions, but these have paid off. By some massive coincidence we won the game 40-0 anyhow…
Jez Stewart decided to take the week off from captaincy and the pivotal position of scrum half. As such he joined a largely untested front row of himself, Paul (Boyo) Williams and Tim Laker. Backing them up was the Hoare family, Sarah and Nem. Sarah was looking to cover as much ground as she normally would as team physic and Nem had heard Ben Cohen was playing for Holbrook. The back row was made up (much like this report) with some others.
Like the Royal Navy's carrier battle group - Illustrious and Invincible - we started with 2 dicks at 9 & 10, notably Richard Swan and Richard McKenna. They were joined in the back line by Matt Harley, The Silent Assassin, Turkey and finally Dani Flower at full back. Dani was also elected captain for the day, it was felt she could bring some of her usual touchline enthusiasm to the pitch.
The game kicked off on time and in awful conditions. We had to wear an old 1970's retro Barbarians kit as our usual kit had been taken by Constable PJ Harley for DNA testing after our loss at Sussex Police.
As luck would have it, we scored a try every 10 minutes. Jez Stewart got the first 3. Sadly we didn't have a recognised kicker (he was elsewhere getting game time?). One of the better tries was scored by Bavers, The Silent Assassin struck once again. I have added a video link to his try below. Try of the day video
Man of the match went to Turkey, possibly his last before Christmas?
All in all a great day out. Followed by some average Argie bashing.
Training or friendly next week, then we have the 3 tough games of the season! Pulborough, Worthing and Bognor.
See you all very soon.
