After a successful 2014/15 season and promotion into Sussex Canterbury Jack Intermediate, our first league games as new boys was to be at home against Eastbourne 2 who had finished top half of the table last season.
A warm and sunny day in Steyning was a great place to start our league campaign, sadly club skipper Jez Stewart was away and so his deputy Tarquin Whatley took over as captain for the day. The match got off at a canter and it was Norfolk or took control from the off - as it would prove, they dominated the first half with Eastbourne being denied any true possession. Tristan Orr - Berwick who makes up for what he lacks in height with surnames - was first to capitalise from some great forwards work, 5-0. Sadly Tim Laker had put his boots on the wrong feet and was to struggle with kicks from the tee for most of the game (out of hand were sublime). More and more pressure from the pack, backed up by some great attacking play though the midfield soon saw Richard Addy get in on the act with another try next to the posts, 10-0. Another couple of drives and indeed two attempts held up where then followed by an incredibly disciplined show from Dan Robinson as he touched down giving us 15-0 with 30 minutes gone, sadly again Tim was just wide of the posts, but made up for it 5 minutes later with a well placed penalty kick. 18 - 0 at half time.
Second half saw Eastbourne turn around and take advantage of the slope. Norfolk defended incredibly well, showing that the incessant training about defensive lines and communication can make a difference. Eastbourne took advantage of a quick tap penalty and broke our lines, touching down just under the posts with a conversion giving them a glimmer of hope. 18 - 7. That glimmer was dismissed when the behemoth that is Will Farthing capped of his man of the match performance with a great drive for the line and our 4th try of the day. Tim kicked the conversion giving us a three score lead again and 28 - 7. Eastbourne rallied once more on the dying minutes and scored a well worked try under the posts, 28 - 14 and the final whistle was to follow soon.
All in all a great win and a truly superb display of how team work and practice can win you games...
Week off next week to allow us a chance to enjoy the Rugby World Cup as it comes to Brighton. Training is back to Thursdays only now and on the astro at the school, lets see as many there as possible ahead of our week off and a chance to enhance our game plans for the trip to Ditchling in two weeks!
Well done all and thank you to those who shared in the support.
